Absence

There were only three people. Margie, a little talkative old woman, and one of my neighbors with her son .

Suddenly, I felt an extremely hurt on my knee. ‘Matt, dear, leave this man alone! , and carry on playing over there, said his mother.

And that´s all?, I thought.

In this moment the doctor appeared slightly heated into the waiting room, he was 10 minutes later: ‘I´m so sorry. A patient had an emergency’.

The child´s mother reproached him his delay: `Yesterday, my son had a fever!’. Margie didn’t remain behind: ‘and I need a medical check-up before my holiday’.

The doctor saw them with resignation and then he talked to me: ‘and you, What do you need?’.

‘I only come here to pick up my wife`s prescriptions’, I said.

And he adds: Couldn´t she come here? How strange! I would have to visit her at home a bit later. Probably, she’s really ill!, he replied with irony.

Ausencia

Y añadió: “¿No pudo venir aquí?, ¡qué raro!

What is the absence?

It is a very difficult concept to explain but very easy to feel.
It is a feeling that fills you and even if it is very strong, will not let you breathe.
It is the loss of a loved one, because it has deceased or because he is gone.
It is the feeling of being alone or you are missing someone or something.
You can not let the absence win you, and always you must look for a way out of it. You
have to stand up and move on.

A poem to the abscence

You are on my side,
appears the absence.
I see your face in each shade
while my house is silence.
I just get your memories
and promise that you asked your friend:
"beam she remarries",
now, he is my boyfriend.

Traducción

Un poema a la ausencia

Te vas de mi lado,
aparece la ausencia.
Veo tu cara en cada sombra
mientras mi casa es el silencio.
Solo me quedan tus recuerdos

The absence (II)

Dear little child

I´ve just killed a poor man. He felt weak. He felt small. He felt nobody. I had been watching him some evenings shuffling over the bridge, looking down, out of the balustrade, at the river. He expected to see himself reflected. But he didn´t, and stared at the black void, down below, spellbound by the whisper of the current, that kept on calling him. His time had come. He wanted to get out of here. Needed my help and I gave him a little shove. No money. No work. No house anymore. Not even the clothes he was wearing. No friends. No hope. No solution. He had to go. Better for you, my sweetheart. He was full of sorrow and pain. Couldn´t tell reallity from fantasy, if he was dreaming or wide awake. Don´t blame him. Forgive him. He really loved you honey, with all his heart.

The absence (I)

Inside my heart it´s cold and dull. Everything looks sad, heavy and bleak. Ice tears running down my face. Shivers down my spine. Gooseflesh all over my aching body.
Home shrouded in mist. But your room remains bright and lit. How can it be?. The colourful bedsheets, these dolls, those books! Take the teddy bear away, please!
I´m still able to feel your warmth, to smell your skin. Reach out to caress you, but you´ve gone. No hugs, no kisses, no more I love you´ s. Nowhere to go. No one to blame. How it hurts deep inside!
Life goes on. I´m trying to find a reason for living, the will to carry on Must be able to remember you and smile. You were given to me by destiny as the most beautiful present.
Stay with me, my sweet heart! Light the rest of my life, my dearest child!

La ausencia (I)

Nadie a quien culpar.

Princesses parking only

"Princesses parking only. All others will be toad” read, in English, the pink sign, on a pink wall above their heads. And princess they certainly were. They ignored what the sign said, they did not even care about that. It is hardly if they knew how to read. When they were children, little girls did not used to attend the school.
Every summer, in the late evening, the group of princesses is in the habit of sitting down on the little square bench. Both, the bench and the sign had been put there by the landlady, the owner of the only house on the square’s corner. A few of them bring their own chair and another one turns up even with her dog, a limp mutt of a mixed breed that has been accompanying her for years. On the ground, a duel of walking sticks. And then, the chitchat starts, lively dialogue of deaf while their voices mix up to the rejoicing cries of swifts across the sky.
It is cold today. In the corner of the little square the wind makes the leaves swirl and the air still echoes the voices while the landlady’s shadow glides over the void space.
But … Who took the bench? Only the forgotten sign remains there waiting for another summer during which, under its legend, probably, its princesses will sit again.

Elodie realized that there wouldn't be any "good night" calls from him anymore. She'd never get used to it. But her phone hadn’t stopped ringing all day. The nerve! She had more than 20 missed calls and unread texts from her family and friends, but they weren't Liam's. Owning a phone had never felt more useless, life had never felt more useless.
She stared at her screensaver, it was the last picture they took together, when he still looked "healthy", way before the chemo vanished their desire to smile in front of a camera. Her chest felt heavy as if it were hard to breath, as if she had suddenly forgotten how to, and her eyes filled with feelings and unfinished memories.
She felt as if someone had taken her identity away. Like she had been forced to enter the witness protection program, swallow her feelings and pretend to be someone else. Elodie didn't know who she was without Liam. She felt lost and it all went dark, because Liam was the sun.

Like two peas in a pod!

Since she was a child, her grandmother talked about him, she showed her pictures… however her mother never talked about him.

"Why does everyone else have a daddy and I don't?" asked herself and she always waited him to visit her, but he never did.
One day she got tired of waiting her absent father and got angry with him, but a few days later, as she couldn't stop thinking about him, she had to make up with him.
Now, she looks at the pictures of her child and she felt a shiver go down her spine: the same eyes, his smile, his hair...just like him !.

ABSENCE

Absence is a waiting room in a train station.
Absence is an empty room with lights on and a room full of people with lights off. Absence of words is silence, absence of silence is noise.
Absence of thoughts is maybe more like a symptom of too deep thoughts – they’re so deep and heavy that they fall off of your mind.
Absence can be both sadness and happiness. It all depends on what’s missing.
Absence can be a photograph of the person that has been far away from you for a long time. Absence can be the presence of things. Isn’t it curious? With the presence of words we can explain the meaning of absence. Maybe we can’t. Maybe you can only truly understand the meaning of absence when you find yourself staring at a grey wall, with no thoughts and nothing in your heart. That moment when, finally, all feelings have left you and all you do is breath in and breath out, though it seems like you’re alone in a universe that’s a hole, not surrounded by anything that relates to you, nothing you can touch or live for, nothing to anchor to. Not even air.

Quizás no podemos.

TOMORROW, PERHAPS

As usual, he did not get into the bathroom first, the shower was working and the radio very loud, the newsreader spoke about the new cutbacks in education promoted by the govermment. He took his toothbrush and brushed his teeth very slowly, thinking about the meeting he had at nine. When he finished, he put the toothbrush next to his wife’s, said good bye and went to work singing his favourite song. He took the bus and sat opposite a teenager who was sending “Whatsapps” messages to his friends. Suddenly, he felt like throwing up, weak and dizzy, got off the bus and ran home as fast as he could. He went up the stairs and opened the door. The radio was still on, he walked to the bathroom, closed the tap and next, he sat on their double bed. When will I learn to live with her absence? he thought. Tomorrow, perhaps. In the radio the members of the government applauded the Prime MInister, he turn it off and began to cry like a child.

I have never thought about how could hurt the loss of someone until I felt it two years ago. I felt for the first time a pain I cannot even explain in words. He left. Anywhere. Anybody knows where. I hope he is "in a better place" but I am not convinced of that. He was happy here, he did not have to go. But life sometimes hits us too strong, and his absence has made me all the harm it could. Wherever you are I feel you close to me. Your memory will always be here with me.

THE PRESENCE OF ABSENCE

Today more than ever, I feel alone among many people, completely invisible for them but I know it’s my fault.
I have to confess this cold night your memory calls me one more time.
When I was a child, you used to remember that I smiled every day.
When I was a teenager, you could read in my eyes my deep thoughts and rescue me from my silly problems.
And now, I just cry thinking of those sweet moments that I lived with you.
One sad morning of November you left away forever without saying a word. Although now I know that you will not come again, I will never forget you because your memory is living in my heart forever and ever.

I MISS YOU!!!

“How many times do I thought to return and say that nothing changed my love… but my silence was higher… and in the distance I die every day… without knowing you”…was singing Roberto Carlos some years ago; he composed that romantic song speaking of absence and melancholy. It´s the kind of song to be listening for a rainy autumnal evening, watching the golden reflection of fallen leaves in the parks, looking through the windows full of water drops covering the crystals.
Yesterday my soul was shrinking and my body was reducing his role till minimal vital signs while my heart was beating slow and deeply. That´s the moment I´d liked to hug you tenderly and kiss you with passion, having my wet eyes looking at you, with open arms and my hands clinging to you!!!

INSIDE A RED CAR…

Diana closed the car door and put on her seat belt carefully. She used to feel nervous at special moments in her life and she was worried about the last time she saw him when she couldn’t tell the truth to her husband. She was really feeling his absence and that was the reason why she had decided to be there.
Suddenly Diana heard the back door closing. A handsome man, around 30, with beautiful eyes and an amazing smile had come into the red car and was looking at her through the mirror. She felt her heart beating faster when he suggested going to the Liston Hotel.
Diana started the engine and started to drive on the streets too. She had been thinking about loads and loads of words to tell him but at that moment she couldn’t say anything. He could see her hand sweating when she grabbed the gear stick and he was thinking that she was really scared of the situation they were involved. Five minutes later, the red car arrived at Liston Hotel and Diana could hear the most expected words: - Congratulations! You’ve passed your driving test at the second chance and you can sign your driving licence.

That day, she did not listen to the news. What were they going to tell her she did not know yet? or worse, that was not hurting as then.
She gets up, dresses, has just a coffee for breakfast, mechanically, and she is about to get out when the telephone rings at the same hour that at the time, she would say with the same urgency. Her heart gives a frisk but she does not answer to the call.
The cold March wind cracks on her face as a whip, but it relieves her of the tumult of thoughts coming to her mind. She pass by quickly the kiosk avoiding to read the newspapers’ full page headlines. She doesn’t look big plasma panels in bars she finds on her way either.
As soon as she arrives at the rail-station, throws one flower to the rails, only one of many and she leaves immediately to her work. She does not want to share her pain, that permanent absence hurting her every moment, every day of her life, that terrible moment repeating itself more intense, obstinately, every morning, every 11th March.

The tobacconist

She was old and she should be retired, stay at home with her family, to do what she had wanted to do, but she continued working… She sold cigarettes in the "Tubo";Martyrs Street was her place of work, not a tobacconist´s, only the streets…
